November 2025 Updates

30 November 2025

Happy (belated) GIS Day to all of you who celebrate the third Wednesday of November, during the educationally festive week we know as Geography Awareness Week.

happy GIS-ing, Leah

Updates from the Month

As we wind down the year and the fall semester (with finals, conferences, and holidays), November and December will be slow months for the Mapping101 team. We will post fewer new tutorials and updates, but please expect us to be back in full swing with the new year.

In the meantime, November included two new posts under Concepts & Methods both on Symbology and Classification:

  • Map Symbology & Classification: Renting in Brooklyn, 2000 presents a time-tested series of comparisons that help us think about the choices we make for map symbology, classification, normalization, and aggregation. The post includes images and slides I have used in my teaching for almost twenty years.

  • Mapping Quantities: Classified versus Unclassified Symbols is an overview, generalized post that defines the difference between classified and unclassified symbols for mapping quantitative values. The description includes examples with point and polygon data and a couple quick considerations to help you decide whether to classify.
