February 2026 Updates

28 February 2026

February has been a busy one! The spring semester is in full swing, and this month's additions to Mapping 101 have been driven squarely by what's happening in the classroom.

happy GIS-ing,
Leah

Updates from the Month

New standalone tutorials on the finer points of coordinate reference systems: Accessing CRS Details (in ArcGIS Pro and in QGIS) as well as Creating a Custom CRS (in ArcGIS Pro and in QGIS).

And more for working in QGIS, including two classics of vector geoprocessing:

As well as three to support working with rasters in QGIS:

  • Kernel Density estimation mapping here (generating "heat maps" using kernel density calculations, including how to work with the key parameters),

  • Classified Quantitative Symbology for Rasters here, and

  • Unclassified Quantitative Symbology for Rasters here.

Coming Up

We have more Concepts & Methods posts in the works for March, along with continued additions to our QGIS tutorial library. As always, if you find these resources helpful, please consider donating to keep Mapping 101 going strong.
