January 2026 Updates

31 January 2026

The spring semester has started, which means plenty of new GIS students. It also means we’re busy double-checking the tutorials most crucial for early learners—and making updates where needed. As always, we regularly update tutorials as when we find they are outdated. If you stumble across a confusing new change, let us know!

And, if you find these resources helpful, please consider donating to the Mapping 101 project fund to keep it going.

happy GIS-ing,
Leah

Updates from the Month

The tutorials for Summarizing Attributes and Adding and Calculating a New Attribute Field have been updated to reflect changes in ArcGIS Pro version 3.

We have also added a new tutorial that summarizes what you will find in QGIS’s Layer Properties menu. Find that in All About Layer Properties in QGIS.

Lastly, I have been noticing a trend in the early weeks of my Advanced GIS course: students coming out of introductory courses often do not see the distinction between “geographic information systems” and “mapping.” I quickly pulled together a new Concepts & Methods post to summarize three key differences: On the Relationship between GIS and Maps.

Forthcoming Stuff on the Horizon

More updates to our archive of tutorials are underway for February, as well as few new tutorials and posts to complement spring teaching.
