June 2025 Updates
30 June 2025
Summer is off and running, with new updates, several new tutorials, and new Mapping 101 contributors! Sally Kaye has joined the team for the summer along with Daniel “Wex” Wexler—both are developing new tutorials (particularly for QGIS). And Steven Duncan is continuing to flesh out a beginner sequence on webmapping with Leaflet.
happy GIS-ing,
Leah
Updates from the month
Find what you need. We have revamped the Skills Tutorials page to help GIS learners find the resources they’re looking for more quickly. The site now includes a categorized list of all software skills tutorials for easier browsing of the collection.
The new Skills Tutorials page features curated sequences of related tutorials to help you find what you need and grow your skillset.
The Getting Started in QGIS tutorial sequence is now complete (and featured on the new Skills Tutorials page). The recent additions to round out the sequence include Making Interactive Measurements and Accessing Feature Attributes.
Other new tutorials include Identifying the CRS of a Feature Layer, identifying and changing the CRS of a Map Canvas, and Interactive Selections and other Selection Basics—all for QGIS. We have also added a helper tutorial for Batch Processing (almost) any Tool in ArcGIS Pro.
New, replacement tutorials for software changes include…
New Spatial Join tutorial for ArcGIS Pro 3.5: The Spatial Joins in ArcGIS Pro tutorial now reflects version 3.5.1 and describes, both, the Spatial Join and Add Spatial Join tools. The previous version has been maintained and archived as reference for older versions.
New tutorial on Creating Distance Rasters from Points in ArcGIS Pro 3.5. The new tutorial demonstrates creating a simple distance raster with the Distance Accumulation tool which is replacing the legacy Euclidean Distance tool described in this now-archived tutorial.
Other updated tutorials include the Clipping Features tutorial for ArcGIS now includes a description of the Pairwise Clip tool.
New content in-the-works
Scenario-based, context-driven exercises for learning GIS methods and software are forthcoming. These will be available for Mapping 101 members as a Thank You for supporting the development of our resources. Supporter memberships will be offered along with the publication of the first exercise.
We are developing Concepts & Methods resources to start sharing in the fall.
